The DR-100mkIII from Tascam is a linear PCM recorder which supports 24-bit/192 kHz recording resolution and is able to record MP3 and WAV files—even at the same time, in dual-recording mode. A different dual-recording mode allows you to record a lower-level safety track in case the initial recording clips, and XRI mode will write the settings used to record the track within the file itself; recorder, mics, level, low-cut filter implementation, limiter, and pad will be represented therein, making your editor’s or post-production engineer’s life a lot easier.

The recorder utilizes AKM AK4558 converters, offers a 109 dB signal-to-noise ratio, sports a temperature-compensated clock, and includes a built-in limiter, variable low-cut filter, and pad. The built-in mic operates in an A/B pattern, and two combination jacks with low-noise HDDA mic preamps can accept XLR and 1/4″ terminations. This unit records to SDXC cards up to 128GB in size, and runs on a combination of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and AA batteries, allowing you to swap the disposable power supply while recording without disrupting the process of capturing audio.

The Tascam iM2X turns an Apple iPhone 4, iPad or iPod Touch 4G into a powerful PCM audio recorder for CD-quality recordings. It consists of a pair of condenser microphones and a high-quality preamp and plugs into the dock connector of the iOS device. The microphone elements are XY oriented for clear stereo definition and minimal phase differences. Moreover, they are adjustable over 180 degrees for the best sound placement.

Unlike mics that use the iOS deviceʼs built-in preamp, the iM2X with its internal A/D converter ensures low noise and better linearity in frequency response. The microphone elements also used in Tascam DR series recorders can handle sound pressure levels up to 125 dB to capture the loudest concerts and instruments without distortion. Thanks to an input level control and a two-colour level meter, level adjustment is very simple. A switchable limiter also contributes to this by reducing sudden peaks and protecting against unforeseen overload.

The iM2X powered through the dock connector, so no battery is required. A USB input is provided to charge the iOS device for long recordings, either through a computer or a USB charger.

An appropriate 2-track recording application (Tascam PCM Recorder) for iOS devices can be downloaded from AppStore at no charge.

Pedigree Portable Field Recorder

The FR-2LE is a compact field memory recorder for professional use offering 24bit 96kHz recording in the industry standard BWF file format. It has a good pedigree given Fostex's previous success with their DAT portables (PD2 & PD4) and latterly with their solid state FR-2 and its optional full timecode facility.

Now with their latest FR-2LE, they have an even more compact offering for high quality field recording, interview recording (MP3 mode also available), or simple film/broadcast audio recording.

The FR-2LE is equipped with two professional phantom powered XLR microphone inputs (XLR-Jack combo) complete with precise control over the recording level. It features a 1 take = 1 file recording system which eliminates overwrites and its 2 second ʽpre-recordʼ buffer means there should never be a missed take or lost soundbite. Thereʼs also an MP3 mode and built-in stereo microphone.

Feature rich, elegant in operation, good pedigree - the new FR-2LE looks assured of success.

MAIN FEATURES

• Long Battery Life

The FR-2LE can run for up to 4 hours on 4 x AA Alkaline batteries and up to 8 hours with the optional NiMH BATPACK battery pack. A choice of two BATPACK chargers are also available - one for the mains and one that also charges your pack from a 12V car outlet.

• Extended recording times

Over 6 hours @ 16bit 44.1kHz recording on an 4Gb CompactFlash card.

• Professional inputs

Dual XLR inputs (XLR-Jack combo) with top quality microphone pre-amps, trim control and phantom power. Analogue out is provided on phono (RCA) connectors.

• BWF or MP3 recording

Record up to 24bit 96kHz audio.

• Tough construction

Manufactured from high-grade materials and specifically designed for professional location recording.
