The PDI03 Palmer speaker simulator combines load impedance, a signal splitter and DI box especially designed for guitars. All functions are optimised for live and recording applications.

Instead of being connected to a loudspeaker, the PDI03 is connected directly to the amplifier output. The signal is no longer picked up by a microphone, but after passing through a special filter section is fed directly into a mixing console, tape recorder, etc. This permits power amplifiers to be operated to saturation without troublesome volume problems.

Two switches select between the 9 filter presets simulating various types of speakers and enclosures. Open back 2 x 12” combo or 4 x 12” cabinet characteristics and the punch of a full-out stack with a graphic EQ ”V” setting can be selected as well as ”American” or ”British” speakers and ultra brightness.

Four paralleled unfiltered outputs are available for further processing. Both filter and line out level are adjustable.

For live monitoring, speakers may be connected while the reactive load is automatically switched off. Power handling capacity is 100W RMS without speakers.

Open back 2 x 12'' combo or 4 x 12'' cabinet characteristics and the punch of a full-out stack with a graphic EQ ''V'' setting can be selected as well as ''American'' or ''British'' speakers and ultra brightness.

Four paralleled unfiltered outputs are available for further processing. Both filter and line out level are adjustable.

For live monitoring, speakers may be connected while the reactive load is automatically switched off. Power handling capacity is 100W RMS without speakers.

With its flexible potential applications, the PDI-05 is equally at home in the studio and home recording as well as onstage, e.g., in the racks of Rush or Def Leppard. Originally developed for the preamp/multieffect/power amp combination popular in the late eighties and nineties, this authentic reissue is also suitable for heads and combo amps. What's more - the precise frequency correction of the stereo speaker simulator turns overdrive and distortion pedals or multieffect units into a genuine preamp with an authentic sound. The PDI 05 lends digital keyboards and drum machines fullness and analogue warmth without complex and time-consuming post-processing at the mixing desk. A built-in headphone amplifier permits "environmentally-friendly" practicing; its high output power even permits direct connection of ordinary hi-fi speakers.

The stereo speaker simulator is active; the power supply is permanently installed. It can also be operated in mono mode and with power amps (in this case, the power amp must always be connected to speakers or a corresponding load, for example the Palmer PDI 06 loadbox).

The PDI-05 makes conventional micing unnecessary and provides for a perfectly isolated signal without interference from other instruments and without feedback. With the reissue, pros and aficionados finally once again have a device at their disposal that has proven itself in more than 20 years of use, onstage and in the studio, around the world.

Special DI box with loadbox for guitars. The integrated load resistor permits tube amplifiers up to approximately 120 W to be connected to the PGA04, bypassing a loudspeaker. A jack socket (unbalanced) and balanced XLR connector are available for direct pickup of the signal. The extensive filter section provides for a realistic simulation of classic guitar loudspeaker sounds.

Technical specifications:

  • Loadbox: 6.3 mm jack input with parallel THRU socket for speaker operation Loadbox
  • Input impedance: 8 ohms, max.
  • Input load: 120 w RMS
  • Input level display: 6 LED's
  • Output: 2 x 6.3 mm jack, unbalanced, floating ground, 1 x balanced XLR output
  • Output impedance: jack: 10.000 ohms, XLR: 600 ohms
  • Level: unbalanced 0 dB, balanced -10 dB at 25 w
  • Input Controls: Volume FiIlter, LOW, HIGH, LITE/BROWN-switch for tone shaping
  • Full Range Volume for unfiltered signal, used in conjunction with the HI-CUT to emulate the bright sound of, e.g., 10-inch speakers
  • Both signals attenuable
