The Ortofon tracking force gauge is a simple budget tool for turntables that is used to determine the stylus tracking force. The tracking force is the downward pressure that is applied by the weight of the tonearm through the cartridge stylus and onto the vinyl record. It is important to set the proper tracking force in order to maximize the playback performance and to reduce the risk of mistracking or causing excessive record wear. Check for the manufacturers recommended settings for your stylus tracking force. The Ortofon tracking force gauge tool is a small plastic pivot type scale that will accurately measure tracking force between 1.25 g and 4 g. The Ortofon stylus force gauge is simple to use: 1. Very gently, rest the cartridge stylus (needle) into the grooved guide track at the desired tracking force marking. 2. Next, adjust the counter-weight or tonearm pressure dials until the Ortofon pivot scale is in balance. The scale on the force gauge is marked in gram.

The Shure SFG-2 Stylus Tracking Force Gauge is the industry standard. This simple-to-use measuring device was developed to give listeners a way to insure against the problems caused by improper tracking force settings, which include mistracking, excessive record and tip wear, and poor sound reproduction.

This gauge is a highly accurate beam balance instrument designed to measure the actual downward force exerted by a stylus on a record over the range of 0.5 to 3.0 grams. Each gauge is individually factory calibrated, and displays readings in 0.05 gram increments in order to provide a precise measurement of stylus tracking force.

Shure SFG-2 Features:
Accuracy to within 1/10 of a gram in primary operating range (1/2 to 1-1/2 grams).
Extended force measurement rage (1 to 3 grams).
Fiction-free precision stainless steel pivot joints.
Easy-to-read reference bars for perfect balance and absolute accuracy.
Tracking force is measured with tone arm in actual playing position.
