Why do microorganisms not survive in UV-C light?

The cell nucleus of microorganisms (bacteria and viruses) contains thymine, a chemical element of DNA / RNA. This element absorbs UV-C light at a specific wavelength of 253.7 nm and modifies it to such an extent (formation of thymine dimers) that the cell is no longer able to multiply and survive. Because of their high luminance, UV radiation and high internal pressure (when hot) HBO lamps may only be operated in enclosed lamp casings specially constructed for the purpose. Mercury is released if the lamp breaks. Special safety precautions must be taken.
